The Naval uniform has been through a long voyage itself. In its history, it has evolved from its initial forms to what it is now.

The first uniform regulations for Royal Naval Officers were historically issued in 1748. The colours and stripes of the Royal Navy were in white and navy blue.

The U.S. Navy formalized its first uniform instructions in 1791. This chose a dress code for Federal Naval Officers who commanded their ships. In 1802, a new set of instructions was issued for the U.S. Navy, and the dress was patterned in blue and gold. This set uniformity even among the enlisted men.

Over the years, reforms have been made on the Navy uniform. But as of 1997, the same ceremonial uniform has been worn by all ratings, whether male or female.

At present, Navy officers and their ratings have distinctly-different uniforms to honor the rank. Primarily, they can either be in blue, white, or a combination of both.

These days, once you hear raves about daring adventures in the high seas, there’s one unlikely hero who comes to mind and that is Captain Jack Sparrow. A notorious, swashbuckling pirate, he’s the lively protagonist of Pirates of the Caribbean three times in a row. First there was The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003, Dead Man’s Chest in 2006, and At World’s End in 2007.

As if we cannot get enough of Captain Jack and his incorrigible seafaring ways, we’re going to see him again in the fourth installment, On Stranger Tides, this 2011.

Although Johnny Depp’s brilliant performance has sparked renewed interest in sea battles and ship chases, there’s an earlier movie about naval strategy. In 2003, Russell Crowe performed memorably as British Captain Jack Aubrey in Master and Commander. A naval novel written by Patrick O’ Brian, it shows how the seas play high stakes in the fate of two nations at war.

Much earlier than any of these movies were classic novels written by famed Scottish author, Robert Louis Stevenson. Kidnapped and Treasure Island are timeless tales of piracy and buried treasure.
