Spanish CostumesFor those looking for a bit of flash and class for their next costume, the Spanish costume options may be what you need!  Nothing says old-school passion like a flamenco señorita or a masterful matador!

As far as readily-available Spanish costume options are concerned, the women have a wider selection to choose from.  One way to go is as the classic flamenco female.  The dress is a bold off-shoulder affair, with plenty of ruffles and lace.  Headpieces with veils add a touch of demure classical glamour.  Some of the dresses of this type feature asymmetrically-cut hems, which makes it easier to strut your stuff in the whirling energy of flamenco!

Few things are as classically Spanish as the matador, and it certainly is a popular costume option for men – but women can get in on the action too!  The general cut of a matador costume fits the body like a glove, as it is meant to give full mobility as well as accentuate the grace and elegance of the matador.  With rich gold trim, it is a sight to behold both inside and outside of the bullring.

For the lady who does not mind flirting, there’s always the short option.  Take the aesthetics of the classic flamenco dress, and cut the skirt short, and you get the idea.  Add some black lace fingerless long gloves and some stockings and you are fit to take and break hearts at whim!

Now you might think of Zorro as being a Spanish or Mexican folk hero, but he was actually the creation of an American writer from New York in the early 20th century.  Nevertheless, Zorro remains a figure to be admired, especially after the recent portrayals by the incomparable Antonio Banderas.  A Zorro costume, complete with cape, mask, and hat, will be your aid to anonymity as you wield your rapier to strike down the unjust and corrupt!

Ladies’ Zorro costumes are available too, with distinct differences in style but the same spirit of vigilante justice.  Instead of full, long sleeves, you get very short sleeves with exposed shoulders, but coupled with a pair of detached sleevelets.  The belt is replaced by a sash, and the lower legs are ragged and torn – perfect for the vigilante look!

The Spanish costume options are indeed varied, and will prove to be a smashing success.  Choose one today, and make the people at your next party say “Olé”!

Spanish Background Information

Spanish informationSpain is a country in Europe which at one time held colonies all over the world.  This has led to influences on local cultures, and there are over half a billion people who speak Spanish as their first language.  Some of the cultural items we associate with Spain are the bullfights, flamenco, and an ineffable romantic feel.

The flamenco is a lively dance with a unique musical style.  Many people feel that a flamenco performance should be fiery and sassy, and the best dancers embody this spirit.  The style of dress popularized by flamenco comes from the gypsies of Spain, thus the colorful nature and complex detailing.

As for Zorro costumes – Zorro is a character who is said to have lived in a Spanish-controlled pueblo in California, way back in those colonial times.  Zorro is a vigilante, often using his brain, but his physical abilities were also very much adequate.  As befitting a crime-fighter, his opponents included not just crooks but corrupt officials as well.

Spanish Movies & TV Shows

Spanish MoviesSpain, owing to its colonial empire of days past, has had a definite impact on many places all over the world.  Of course, the colonists – particularly the richer ones – brought their modes of dress, thus influencing local attire.  The Spanish costume remains something that is instantly recognizable.

Perhaps the best exposure for these costumes comes from television and movies.  Documentaries on Spain invariably cover the bullfights and flamenco, each of which has distinctive styles of clothing.  As such, we often think of the matador costume as the national dress for men, while the flamenco dress is for women.  In truth, Spain allows each of its autonomous regions to have their own folk costume.

References to gypsy lifestyle can give some insight into flamenco, as they had contributed greatly to it in all of its aspects.  In regards to matadors, there is no substitute for watching the real thing, or at least a recording.

Maybe the Spanish Halloween costume or party costume is not your cup of tea – or glass of sangria.  In that light, you might consider some of these alternatives.

Though more correctly a Mexican rather than a Spanish Halloween costume, costumes based on Dia de los Muertos aesthetic components.  The skeleton is a particularly favored symbolism in the Mexican Day of the Dead, and is perfect for Halloween.  Don’t turn around when you hear the click-clack of bones, just run!

As Mexico is perhaps Spain’s most well-known colony in previous eras, it is difficult to separate the two in our minds.  Mexico features its own unique set of costume ideas, and the colorful and fun nature of these outfits make them great choices.  Get a serape and a sombrero.  Get wild with a wrestler outfit.  Or just poke fun and have fun with the taco costume, modeled after that most iconic of Mexican dishes!
